How To Download New Fonts To Photoshop

People often tell me I'm a font of wisdom, so allow me to share some wisdom about fonts. (Needless to say, I'm not a font of humor.)

In Windows 10, not much has changed about the way typefaces are installed, deleted and otherwise modified, but if you're not familiar with the processes, well, it's all new to you. Here's everything you need to know.

First up, you'll need to access the font control panel. Easiest way by far: Click in Windows 10's new Search field (located just to the right of the Start button), type 'fonts,' then click the item that appears at the top of the results: Fonts - Control panel.

Adding new fonts to Adobe Illustrator is done through the computer's operating system rather than through the Illustrator program. The advantage of this is managing a central repository of installed fonts accessible by all programs on the computer rather than managing individual repositories. *After installing the new font in Windows 7, you may need to shut down Photoshop CS5 and restart it before you can see the new font in the font drop-down menu at the top of the window. Summary – how to add fonts to Photoshop. Download the font to your desktop. Right-click the downloaded font, then click the Extract All option.

As you can see, there's no clearly identified option to add new fonts, but the process is easy: just drag any TrueType font file to the main window containing all your other installed fonts. (See screenshot at top.) When you drop it, you'll see a brief 'installing font' message, and then, presto, you're done.

Removing a font is even easier: Click one, then click Delete. Just be careful not to remove any important system fonts like Calibre, Microsoft Sans Serif and Tahoma.

Finally, if you want to make systemwide changes to your font settings, you can do so here by looking to the toolbar on the left side of the Font control panel. For example, to increase or decrease the font size for, say, menus and icons, click Change Font Size. Choose the item you want to change, then select a size. (You also have the option of ticking the Bold box, which is actually kind of a nice tweak for things like title bars.)

After making your selection, click Apply, noting that it'll take a few seconds for the change to go into effect.

And that's it! Now you know the basics of Windows 10 font management.

Compelling typography is a vital element of most design and desktop publishing projects. Your copy of Photoshop draws its font library from the collection of fonts installed for system-wide use on your computer. This means that to get new fonts to use in Photoshop, you have to download and install them using the standard font installation tool on your PC.

Download Fonts

There are a variety of font repositories available online (links in Resources). Most group fonts into stylistic categories. To download a font, browse through the categories, and then follow the site's procedure for downloading files. On most sites, you simply click a download link, and then select the location on your computer where you want to save the font files. Note that although many fonts are comprised solely of one file, those with multiple weights or italicized formats are comprised of multiple files contained within one common download file.

Types of Fonts

Your Windows 8 computer is compatible with a variety of font formats, including OTF, TTF, PFB and PFM. The majority of fonts you can download from font websites are OTF or TTF. When searching for fonts to download, pay attention to both the font format and the licenses that accompany the fonts. Some fonts are free for use in any medium, some are free for personal use only, some are shareware and a few cost money.

Install Fonts

Open File Explorer, navigate to the location on your computer where you saved your downloaded font files, double-click single fonts to open the font preview window, and then click the 'Install' button to install the font. If you downloaded a number of different fonts, you can also install them in bulk: press and hold the 'Ctrl' key on your keyboard as you click each of the fonts you want to install, and then right-click the group of selected fonts and select 'Install' from the context menu to install all of the fonts.
